What is Zen Heart Sutra?
Zen Heart Sutra is an iOS app that lets you read the Heart Sutra one line at a time, paced by the steady beat of an authentic mokugyo and the resonant chime of a meditation bell. It offers a gentle modern translation in Japanese and English, plus furigana and Romaji subtitles. Repeat mode loops the sutra endlessly, providing a calming ambient soundscape for deep work and study.
How to Use
Basic Operation
- Launch the app to see the Heart Sutra cover page.
- Tap the center of the screen to ring the opening bell and start automatic chanting.
- Tap the top third of the screen to show Display options (furigana, modern translation, Romaji, English, text size).
- Tap the bottom third of the screen to show Player controls (SE toggle, loop, speed 0.5–1.5x, volume).
- Menus auto-hide after 5 seconds.
- Tap any line in the sutra body to jump to that line.
Repeat Mode
As an Ambient Soundscape
Toggle the loop icon in the Player to keep the sutra repeating indefinitely. The mokugyo and bell continue without interruption, bringing temple stillness into your office or study space for focused work.
Troubleshooting
Common Issues
No sound is playing
- Check that the iPhone silent switch is not enabled.
- Confirm the mokugyo SE icon is enabled in the Player panel.
- Check the mokugyo and bell volume sliders in the Player panel.
Menus disappear too quickly
- Menus auto-hide 5 seconds after the last interaction.
- Tap the top or bottom third of the screen again to bring them back.
How do I change playback speed?
- Tap the bottom third of the screen to open the Player, then choose 0.5x / 0.75x / 1x / 1.2x / 1.5x.
- The mokugyo beat re-syncs to the new speed automatically.
