ATC Drive
Overview
What is ATC Drive?
ATC Drive is a voice-navigation app for iPhone and iPad that reads ordinary driving directions as air-traffic-control (ATC) style callouts. Search for a destination, depart, and it guides your turns and remaining distance in ATC-style phrasing. It also supports CarPlay for use on your car screen. The app is free to use.
ATC Drive is for entertainment and familiarization. It is not a substitute for real air-traffic control or for your own judgment in real traffic. Always follow road signs, signals, and conditions and drive safely.
Getting Started
Basic Operation
- Launch the app and allow location access so it can guide you. No account or login is required.
- Open Settings (gear, top-right) and enter your vehicle callsign (make, model, plate). The callsign is used in the spoken guidance.
- Choose a Mode (A / B / C) in Settings to set how much is spoken (see below).
- Search for a destination and tap Depart to begin spoken guidance.
- To use it in your car, connect your iPhone to CarPlay; ATC Drive appears on the car screen.
Speech Modes
Mode A / B / C
- Mode A — driving essentials only (turns, reroutes, arrival, tolls).
- Mode B — Mode A plus all of the app's distinctive ATC-style announcements, including ATIS-style weather, airspace, and airport advisories.
- Mode C (default) — the same content as Mode B, plus periodic position reports during long quiet stretches. Switch to B or A if it feels too chatty.
Troubleshooting
Common Issues
I can't hear any voice
- Check that the iPhone silent switch is off and the volume is up.
- Make sure the in-app mute button (speaker icon) is not showing a slash.
- When connected via Bluetooth / CarPlay, also check the car's media volume.
It asks for location permission
- Location is required for navigation. Choose "Allow While Using App."
- You can change this later in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → ATC Drive.
Guidance stops in tunnels or mountains
- When GPS is temporarily lost, the app announces "radar contact lost" and continues guiding along the route by estimation.
- It returns to normal guidance automatically once GPS recovers.
ATC Drive doesn't appear in CarPlay
- Confirm your iPhone is connected to CarPlay (cable or wireless).
- Tap the ATC Drive icon on the car's CarPlay screen.
- If it still doesn't appear, reconnect or restart your iPhone.
